There's Bacon in the Air

OMG, Bacon is just flying out of everywhere these days. So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it. Anywhere, here's some random bacon news...

Conan O’Brien said he would bring his show to the Minnesota State Fair if he could have his weight in chocolate-covered bacon. Perhaps a 205-pound bacon-hair-topped chocolate bust will do?

Permanent Brunch is a new eatery in NYC and I've got a date with destiny. On the menu is a Artisanal Bacon Bar where you can choose from New Braunfel's Smokehouse Comal County Peppered Bacon, Hungarian Smoked Kolozvari Bacon, Swiss Sugar-Cubed Cottage Bacon, Burger's Smokehouse Country Sugar Cured Bacon and Meacham Hams Country Bacon. Brunch all day? Why not!

In downtown L.A., Ilan Hall, Season 2's winner of "Top Chef", opened a new restaurant that combines his Scottish and Israeli heritage in quite a creative way. Some of the dishes served at The Gorbals include Bacon-wrapped matzoh balls and Manischewitz-braised pork belly.

And to cap off the day, here's a gem from ABC’s Wife Swap. This kid is hilarious. You can take away his Cheeze Wiz but goddammit, you can't take away his bacon!

Hey Chicago........BACON!

Yo, bacon-lovers in Chicago listen up! Stephanie Izard, bacon aficionado and winner of Bravo’s Top Chef (2008) is putting together a dinner for you. On September 2nd, Chef Stephanie Izard will be whipping up the second Wandering Goat dinner, part of a traveling dinner series leading up to the opening of her new restaurant, The Drunken Goat. The menu for the Wandering Goat dinner is all about the bacon!

“After having so much fun at the last dinner, I am really looking forward to meeting another group of new people and sharing some of the new creations I have been working on. At my restaurant, the Drunken Goat, we will serve our own cured meats (including bacon), so lately we have tried out a bunch of different cures and smoking methods. I’m excited to share my findings!” says Stephanie.

Some of the menu items listed are: Bacon Crisped Oysters, Bacon and Smoked Trout Salad with Heirloom Tomatoes, Aji-Braised Pork Belly, and a selection of different Bacon Gelato from Black Dog Gelato.

If I was even close to Chicago I would be there in a heartbeat! If you're interested in going you can follow Stephanie on Twitter (@stephanieizard) where she will announce when the tickets are available for purchase. Price is $65 which includes all food and drink, and the secret location will be unveiled to ticket owners a few days before by email.

Vaultz Ruby Skull Pencil Box

It doesn't matter that I'm nearing 40, I'll always remember the special memories of back to school shopping. New clothes, yes, but more importantly, new supplies. Fresh notebooks (trapper keepers!), new pencils and crazy erasers, a lunch box and some paper clips that I could use as a fake retainer. For some crazy reason, in 4th grade, I thought retainers were super cool and I always wanted one.

Anyhow, they sure didn't make pencil boxes like these when I was a kid.

Vaultz Ruby Skull Pencil Box - $10.99 & eligible for FREE Shipping on orders over $25 @ Amazon

Fortunately, you don't have to be in school to find a use for this fancy box. With chromed steel corners and aluminum trim, this box is actually good for more than just school supplies as it comes with a key lock to keep your stash (whatever it may be ;) private.

MAPLE BACON SHAKE

I've been busier than a crack dealer on payday but I wanted to get on here for a moment to share with you this recipe I ran across today. Sounds yummy to me, plus easy to make. Someone should totally make this Maple Bacon Milkshake and bring me some.

2 slices bacon (about 2 ounces), cut into thin strips
6 tablespoons cold whole or low-fat milk (about 3 ounces)
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup, preferably grade B (about 1 ounce)
Pinch of salt
8 medium scoops French vanilla ice cream (about 1 quart), softened until just melty at the edges.

1. Fry the bacon in a small skillet set over medium heat, stirring frequently, until rendered and crisp, about 5 minutes. With a slotted spoon, remove the cooked bacon to paper towels to drain, and nibble on it or reserve it for another use. Off the heat, briefly cool the fat in the skillet.

2. Place the milk, maple syrup, 1 tablespoon of cooled bacon fat, salt and ice cream in a blender and pulse several times to begin breaking up the ice cream.

3. With the blender motor off, use a flexible spatula to mash the mixture down onto the blender blades. Continue pulsing, stopping and mashing until the mixture is well blended, thick and moves easily in the blender jar, roughly 30 to 90 seconds. Pour into a chilled glass or glasses, and serve at once.

I'd probably use the bacon strips to spoon the milkshake into my mouth. That's just how I roll.

Lydia Courteille's Skull Jewelery

I have just discovered the most exquisite jewelery from the French designer Lydia Courteille. If I had a home to hock to invest in these gems I probably would. Then I'd wear all my finery to Mickey D's to eat from the Dollar Menu for the rest of my life.

Lydia Courteille creates her hand-crafted, limited edition or one-of-a-kind masterpieces from diamonds, rubies, green garnets, white and yellow sapphires and other precious and semi-precious stones such as jade, pink jasper and onyx in white gold and rhodium settings. There's only one retail location where you can fondle and purchase these fantastic pieces of art, in Paris on a quiet stretch of rue Saint Honoré.

Mere words don't do these justice....

At approximately $10,000-$30,000 per ring, I don't harbor any illusions that I may one day own a design from Lydia Courteille but they're so beautiful that I'm happy just looking at them.

Bacon Ale from Brooklyn Brewery?

Well, not yet, but this story about one of NYC's local breweries has my panties all in a bunch.

It seems that Brooklyn’s Brewery's brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, has created a special malt that was smoked in the same room with some of the bacon made by the Allan Benton. “It’s almost terrifying how much the malt smells like bacon,” Mr. Oliver said.

According to the New York Times Diner's Journal, Mr. Oliver plans to brew about 15 gallons of barleywine with that malt. In the meantime, he’s been infusing a brown ale with the flavor of Benton’s bacon fat through a technique known as “fat washing.” And the bacon-fat-infused ale was also aged in bourbon barrels. (Win, Win, WIN!)

Eventually, the plans are to blend the barleywine with the bacon-smoked malt and the bourbon-aged, bacon-fat-infused ale to create one smokey bacon monster beer.

“One of two things will happen,” Mr. Oliver predicted. “Either this will be the most amazingly disgusting thing you’ve ever tasted in your life. Or I shall rule the earth.”

I signed up for Brooklyn’s Brewery's mailing list as I imagine that this brew will be limited and in high-demand.

Skulls From China!

I've been working crazy hours and haven't been able to rustle up as much free time as I'd like to come and post here. I'm trying though, I hate to feel like I am neglecting Skulls & Bacon!

Yesterday I came across this fun little Skull Cup Holder for your car. It clips to your air vent and pretty inexpensive even coming from China ($6.69 & $5.49 shipping).

The best part however, are the descriptions on this website. Some good Engrish always gets me smiling.

"It makes you drink handily and really enhance your enjoyment while driving."

So obviously I had to look around the site some more to see what other gems were floating about. This one is insane...
Battery Powered Like Real Hamburger Sonant Prank Trick Funny Toy - $7.19

You can use Tricky Hamburger Toy as a perfect gift!
When you open this Tricky Hamburger, it will come out a skull suddenly and it is fearful.
The fearful skull inside the hamburger is flexible and can be folded together.

I must have it!

PC Desktop Computer Skull Fan Grill Dust Cover - $2.69

Pretty awesome although the back of my computer pretty much never sees the light of day.

Funny Grinding Skeleton Grinder Kids Toy - $21.69

-This Funny Skeleton Toy is a very funny Kids Toy with a famous proverb: Money makes the mare go.
-A super funny Grinder Toy for your kids who is ups to 3 years old
-Open the up cover of millstone, put some shampoo in it.
-Put a coin into the rectangle hole and then you can see the skeleton is grinding for money with flashing. When the foam falls off, open the up cover, put some shampoo and water in the millstone will be ok.

Wow, ok. Money makes the mare go? I'm really confused.
Especially cool is that this is good for kids up to 3 years old. Who's handing their 2 year old coins and shampoo?

This one is included just because of the description:
Jeans Gas Cigarette Lighter - $5.69

-Brand new high quality lighter, never used
-Great GIFT for birthday, Christmas, anniversary, wedding ... etc

Really? Awesome, I know what my friends are getting for their wedding present! Anyhow, take a look around the site, it's pretty amusing. And I'm real close to getting that prank hamburger skull thingy.
