I never meant to take a three month hiatus from Skulls & Bacon. Not sure what happened other than, well, let's just say I was hibernating. Spring is a few days away so it's about time I crawl out of my cave to let the funk of these last few months disappate.

Of course, there was a skull object that has brought me back and made me think, goddamn, I need to post this.

Bacon Table Lamp

Wandering around Etsy.com today, I ran across this amazing Bacon Lamp ($35.00). Made of archival ink and paper, the bacon looks great in the daylight but this lamp really comes to life with it's bacony glow.




The only other bacon lamp I've seen was made out of real bacon and, well, while that's cool, it's not very practical, is it?

The artist, Monica (czechpub on Etsy), also has a really great Skeleton Lamp for sale.

I Need Your Skull Art Show

This past Saturday, I trekked over to the MF Gallery in Brooklyn for the opening of the "I Need Your Skull" art show. 30 international artists were asked to present a piece depicting a human skull and all the money raised from sales of the skull art will be used to build a giant, 20 foot 3-D skull on the facade of the MF Gallery building.

I was really impressed by the artwork and really wanted to buy something. There were quite a few that I really liked but the ONE I insanely wanted was $400, which while not that expensive for a piece of art, is still out of my budget.

I wish they had posted a picture and name next to each display, as most of the artists were there and I would have loved to speak with them but I didn't know who anyone was. The space is small and it was pretty crowded and hot, so I didn't stay all that long.

When my friends and I left to get some food and drinks and just a few blocks away, I made an *awesome* find. Someone had thrown out a perfectly good cow skull! Of course, I immediately grabbed it. Here's a picture of me giddy with delight and gingerly holding the thing in case it was infested with something. It seemed clean enough, so we took it out to eat with us. Great thing about nyc, no one at the restaurant even questioned why there was a cow skull sitting on our table.

Awesome, right?

Floor to Heaven

Although they've been around for a couple of years, I just found Floor to Heaven, a European company that creates custom made handtufted and handknotted carpets and rugs that double as conceptual art pieces, made from the finest textiles the world has to offer, such as wool sourced from New Zealand and Tibet. The website itself doesn't have much information other than a few nice examples but no indication of pricing, which I'm sure is way out of my range. What's especially cool is that they'll work with you to create your own designs.

Bacolicious Art

I'm sure you might remember last year when Bacolicious fever hit the internet and everyone was slapping a slice of internet bacon across their favorite websites. Well, Erika Nelson from Worlds Largest Things just did an awesome art installation project at the Smoky Hill River Festival this weekend in Salina, Kansas.

“Bacolicious” – Exploring a current internet meme, this installation brings to mind the culture of fairs and festivals as an idealized excape–where you can indulge in some decadence, guilt-free. Fried foods on a stick, funnel cakes, the kind of foods that you yearn for, nostalgically, yet don’t allow yourself to have unless at a “special” event–The graphic elements of “Bacolicious” will invoke the visceral smells and tastes of the Festival’s atmosphere.





I'm not sure how the Bacolicious art project came into being, but it's pretty awesome. If I had been anywhere near Kansas this weekend, I definitely would have gone just to see the internet come to life. And have my picture taken with a giant strip of bacon. The Wellness Skull & Sensory Deprivation Skull

The Wellness Skull & The Sensory Deprivation Skull are the creations of Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout.

Currently situated near a busy Vienna intersection, the Wellness Skull is a 15 foot ball of relaxation. The head of the Skull contains a sauna and when it is in use, hot steam pours out of the eye sockets. On either side of the neck is a small bath and shower.

It officially goes on display as part of an effort by Public Art Vienna to revitalize and enhance urban space around the capital. Although the skull is fully functional, visitors will only be able to go inside every first Saturday of the month or by appointment through March 15, 2009.






The Sensory Deprivation Skull is the most awesome thing I've seen where you can sit and cut yourself off from the rest of the world. When this was created in 2007, they were only available in a limited edition of 10, so I'm going to assume that they were totally snatched up in a matter of moments.





I realize that these are not pieces that are readily available but they really should be. Wouldn't you want one of those skull chairs? You know my neighbors would love a giant skull with steam pouring from the eye sockets in my backyard. I know I would.

Bacon Man with a Bacon Weave Face

I know nothing about this picture but it's fascinating.



I found this pic on miss Karen's Flickr photostream with only the cryptic tagline, "Made from 30 pounds of bacon by Diva and Steve". I'm afraid I am not content with this explanation and I need more information.

-Did it really take 30lbs of bacon to put this together?
-How many drinks did it take to come up with this idea?
-How is the bacon attached to the frame?
-Did you eat it when you were done?
-Are there any more pictures? (I want to see the bottom half!)

Russian Sausage Art

I realize that Sausage is not Bacon but I feel the need to give any Meat Art it's due. Can't really find any other info on this interesting Sausage Art other than:

1) It's Russian
2) It's edible and
3) Supposedly anyone can just walk up and eat the artwork
