The Goddamn Bacon Explosion

Ok people, I am putting up a link to the BBQ Bacon Explosion because every one and their mothers have been sending me the link, posting it on Facebook and Reddit, it's EVERYWHERE. I guess that's what happens when the esteemed New York Times decides to dip a toe into Bacon Territory. BBQ Addicts created this massive bacon and sausage rollup prompted by a request for recipes from the guys over at BaconToday.com. For better insight into this bacon monstrosity, check Royal Bacon Society for a history of concoctions spawned by the Bacon Mat.

Anyhow, since Superbowl is coming up soon, I thought I'd share this insanity with you:

The Greatest Snack Food Stadium Ever Built

Yes, there's a pound of Bacon, 58 twinkies, Vienna Sausages, Slim Jims and various dips and chips involved. Go over to Holy Taco and read more about it. I'm not sure one pound of bacon was enough, but other than that, color me super impressed.

Bacon Scratch N' Sniff Stickers

I was gonna do an awesome original bacon post tonight, however, I caught a god-awful cold over the weekend that's just killing me. My eyes are melting and my lips are going to crack and fall off my face. I just took a painkiller I had left over from spraining my ankle a few weeks ago which won't help my cold symptoms at all but will hopefully cure everything else temporarily. I'm gonna type this up as fast as I can while I still can....

Back in the early 80's I was obsessed with stickers. A few times a week, I used to go to a local store called Karten's that had a wall with just rolls upon rolls of stickers. They were on my notebooks (Trapper Keepers!) and my bedroom wall and everywhere else I could stick them. Rainbows and hearts and especially Scratch N' Sniff. Scratch N' Sniff stickers were awesome, some smelled good, some smelled awful and they had the craziest selection of smells. I remember chocolate being one of my least favorites and pickles being one of my favorites.

Lest you think there are no good bargains left on Ebay, I managed to win an auction for a sheet of original 1980's Bacon Scratch N' Sniff stickers a few weeks ago for only 99 cents! They don't smell anymore but I'm ok with that, I'm just happy to be the proud owner of these...

Sometimes it's the little things in life.

2GB Skull USB Drive

Although the USB Flash Drive Skull Ring I posted about back in November is uber-cool, no one I know is going to shell out $200 for it. Happily, I just came across this Skull USB 2GB Drive for only $19.00.

Builder's Breakfast & Cajun Squirrel Potato Chips

Helloooo...I could really use from friends in the U.K. right now! Please send over some Walkers Crisps (Potato Chips to us Americans) STAT!

'Do us a Flavour, Pick us a winner' is a competition to find the next flavour of Walkers Crisps. Walkers 'Do us a flavour' was the public's chance to create the next great flavour of Walkers crisps and they've been whittled down to these 6 finalist flavours:

* Builder's Breakfast - Egg, bacon, sausage and beans
* Cajun Squirrel
* Chilli & Chocolate
* Onion Bhaji
* Crispy Duck & Hoisin
* Fish & Chips

I've never had a traditional full English Breakfast but I would love to try it in chip form. Acually I would love to try all of those flavors. I don't know what Squirrel flavored potato chips might taste like but Walkers say that no actual squirrels were harmed, so eat up if you can find them! How much is shipping from the U.K. anyway?

I've have had a chance to try the Smokey Bacon Potato Crisps and the Frazzles and they both had a great bacony taste. Much better than the Pringles Bacon Ranch which was edible but not something I would buy ever again. Anyway, Walkers is owned by Frito-Lay, which is a subsidiary of Pepsico so I can't understand why they can't do anything as adventurous here in the States. Check out just some of the Walkers flavors already available (some may have been limited edition):

* BBQ Rib
* Cheese & Onion
* Chilli & Lemon
* Marmite
* Pickled Onion
* Prawn Cocktail
* Roast Chicken
* Smoky Bacon
* Steak & Onion
* Peanut Butter
* Worcester Sauce
* Roast Gammon
* Sweet Cumberland Sausage
* Chicken Tikka
* Roast Turkey & Stuffing

I really can't understand why they are keeping these treasures out of the U.S.

Welcome to the party!

Bacon for Dessert

Check the bottom of the piece for a link to some nice recipes.

Skull & Crossbone Pillows @ BB&B

Really nice throw pillows can be so damn expensive. I'm not sure why two squares of fabric and some stuffing cost cost as much as they do and if I were at all crafty I would just make my own skull pillows and they would be fabulous. Until then, these skull and crossbone pillows from Bed Bath and Beyond are super cute and totally within my budget!

Skurvy Toss Pillow - $29.99

Plush Skull and Crossbones Pillow - $19.99

BB&B has some other nice skull items including the great Sin in Linen™ sheet sets in black, pink and white. I haven't been able to find any skull sheets that will fit a 18"+ mattress though, if anyone else has please let me know!

Maple and Bacon Roasted Almonds

I always have Good Day NY (Fox5) on in the morning while I'm getting ready for work and yesterday I heard the word BACON mentioned and had take to take precious minutes out of my daily routine to see what was going on. The chefs from Buttermilk Channel, a new restaurant in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens, were whipping up a batch of Maple and Bacon Roasted Almonds and they looked YUMMY. Not only that but pretty damn easy to make. Here's the recipe:

Maple and Bacon Roasted Almonds

Ingredients:
1 pound almonds
1/2 pound slab bacon
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 tbs. mustard powder
Salt

Directions:

1. Cut bacon into large dice, about the size of a whole almond. Cook bacon until it's crispy. Toss bacon, bacon fat, almonds and mustard powder until almonds are well coated.

2. Combine with maple syrup and toss again till well coated. Cook, stirring constantly, until maple syrup is just coating the almonds. Pour onto a paper lined sheet pan. Sprinkle with salt. Let cool.

4. Should resemble brittle when done.

I think I can do this!

Buttermilk Channel seems to cure their own bacon which is available grilled as an appetizer. Two other bacon related dishes on the menu are Roasted Cauliflower & Apple Soup with Crispy Bacon & Croutons and Bacon-Wrapped Brook Trout with Jonnycakes and Leek Confit.
That soup sounds really interesting!

Bacon going strong in 2009!!!

Skull Carpet - Funny Bones Rug

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and sorry for the long absence! I managed to fall down go boom my last day of work before vacation and spent my time off having fun with a sprained ankle and knee. Anyhow, Monday's back to the grind so it's time to put on my "outside" clothes and face the real world with my newly acquired limp.

I did manage to do a bit of online shopping this week and ran across this amazing carpet from FLOR. FLOR is a line of design-inspired carpet squares that lets you create unique area rugs, runners or wall-to-wall carpet designs. You can place the carpet tiles wherever you decide and you can move them anytime you want.

Funny Bones Rug from FLOR

The Funny Bones rug is probably the first real skull carpet that I've seen and I've been looking. Little area rugs can be found but even the selection there is limited. I'm pretty sure I'm going to order this in the next few days. It will look fabulous at the foot of my bed.
