"Bake-In" (Bacon) Oozy Bread

Whether or not you're a fan of Rachel Ray's, this recipe looks fantastic and easy. "Bake-In" Oozy Bread has only 4 ingredients:

* 1 package bacon, chopped
* 1 8-ounce jar maple syrup
* 1 stick butter
* 1 package (8 biscuits) home-style buttermilk biscuits
(Pillsbury preferred)

Go to Rachel Ray's website for the full recipe and video where you can see the fresh-out-of-the-oven bread glisten with butter, syrup and bacon. I'm not ashamed to admit that I just drooled a little as I was typing that.

Skull Island Bed & Bedding

Well, I wished in a previous post that someone from the U.K. would send me some bags of Walkers Crisps and that wish came true (thanks Simon!) so now I'm gonna wish someone from Germany would send me this bed -

The Skull Island bed from Burning Beds is only €799.00 (about $1000) and I don't know anything else since the site is mostly in German.

This awesome bedroom ensemble is also named Skull Island -

Unlike the bed though, the Skull Island Bed-in-a-Bag® from Domestications is totally affordable and super cute. Only $59.99 twin or full and the matching skull curtains are only $29.99. If there was Queen size available this would be mine already. I do wish they sold the pillowcases separately though. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I only have one bed and there's only so many places to stash sheets and pillows.

The Brooklyn Bacon Takedown

While I lament that I cannot attend the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival that's sure to be a blast this weekend in Iowa, I am very excited about the upcoming Brooklyn Bacon Takedown.

Run by The Chili Takedown, this event is taking place on Sunday, March 29th, at Radegast Hall & Beer Garden in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Thirty bacon dishes go head to head. Anything and everything goes as long as it includes bacon. Only $10 to get in, taste all of the entries, and vote on the winner. And it's in a beer garden which is just like icing on the meat cake.

They already have 30 contestants but if anyone drops out they do have a waitlist going. You can email Matt Timms for more info.

Fortunately, I'm not about the cooking, I'm about the eating. I'll see you there.

The 'Do us a Flavour' Taste Test

Simon, a very nice guy from the UK wrote to me after seeing my post on the Walkers Crisps 'Do us a Flavour, Pick us a winner' contest, and asked if I would like some of those crazy flavored chips to try out. Well, Simon came through and mailed me a big box of chips from the U.K. Thanks so much Simon, it really was very, very generous of you.

As a reminder, the potato chip flavors that are up for votes in the contest are:

* Builder's Breakfast - Egg, bacon, sausage and beans
* Cajun Squirrel
* Chilli & Chocolate
* Onion Bhaji
* Crispy Duck & Hoisin
* Fish & Chips

My boyfriend and I did a taste test together and we really didn't agree on any of the flavors. I loved the Builder's Breakfast, which really did taste like cheesy scrambled eggs, and the Chilli & Chocolate, which stared out with a nice choco flavor and had some delayed heat at the end. His favorite was the Fish & Chips. The Cajun Squirrel wasn't bad, but I can't really compare it to squirrel so I would put it close to a roasted chicken flavor. The Onion Bhaji was ok if you like curry. I absolutely hated the Crispy Duck though.

I had some bags left over and a 2 hour lunch meeting today at work, so I brought the chips in for everyone to try. Here's a cell pic of the unsuspecting co-workers:

There was no consensus - some hated the Builder's Breakfast and some liked it. The Cajun Squirrel seemed to be a hit. I'm sending an email to my co-workers to see if I can get them to comment here and let us know what they think.

Either way, it was a lot of fun. If I saw these flavors at the store here in the U.S. I would have to try them at least once, but I'm not sure that I would go back for more. One thing I can say though, is that the chips really do taste like what they are supposed to taste like (the snozzberries taste like snozzberries). The Walkers Smokey Bacon chips though, they are aces. We need some good bacon potato chips in the States, you hear that Lays?

Happy Valentines Day!

While I'm cooking up some bacon for a romantic Valentine's Day breakfast at 3pm, here's a short feature called "Bleeding Heart" by Spook House Dave! It's the sweet and creepy online puppet series about a vampire, a witch, a werewolf, a mummy, and a rather large Frankenstein monster. Reminds me a bit of the Muppets and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Wooden Earbuds by Skull Candy

Carved real wood earbuds, with laser-cut aluminum accents - a serious (and
eco-friendly) upgrade from you're your standard-issue white plastic buds. They're costly and I don't usually spend this much on headphones mainly because I don't take care of them so well. But these...are just too awesome. Wooden earbuds with skulls? Love it.

Bacon Stupidity

Earlier this week, I ran across a blog where this guy made the decision to eat nothing but bacon for the entire month of February. He calls it Bacon Stupidity and that name seems fitting. This is a crazy but interesting idea and I really look forward to see what happens as the month progresses.

So as I was writing this up, I saw that they posted about this on Bacon Today and through their post I found out that "this guy" is actually Mike Nelson, who you may remember as the the star of Mystery Science Theater 3000! I love MST3K so this info makes his challenge doubly exciting to me.

You can keep up to date with Mike's quest on Blog.Rifftrax.com and I'll post any big news here too.

As much as I love bacon, I know I could not make it through a month of nothing but bacon. Good luck Mike!
