My New Sugar Skull Shower Curtain

I finally had to replace my Jeremy Fish bunny skull shower curtain. As much as I loved it, plastic shower curtains only last so long. I was super happy when I found this sugar skull shower curtain at HowCool.com. I was only $19.14 and it's nice quality too. Looks awesome in my bathroom!

And here it is in my bathroom, next to my sparkly skull soap dispenser, which I bought for full price at Bath & Body Works but you can get on clearance right now for only $3. Move fast though!

I know it's hard to believe, but after four years of bacon blogging, I've finally found a bacon rug! You know I put my order in the minute I saw it. Hand-hooked, polyester and acrylic with cotton backing. For indoor use. 52"L x 15"W.

If you need me, I'll be sitting outside by my mailbox waiting for my new bacon rug to arrive.

Skulls @ Target - Halloween 2011

If you haven't gone to Target yet for their 2011 Halloween and Skull stuff, stop reading now and run there. I'm late in posting this and the cool stuff has a tendency to fly off the shelves. I was stalking Target until they got their Halloween selection on the shelves and I've had to go back a few times, each time they had different items, and hidden throughout the store. Not everything is on their website either, so you have to GO.

Here are my favorite finds this year:

Skull Bath Rug - this one is my favorite find of the season and I did a happy dance around the store when I saw it. It's not on the website and wasn't in the stores the first two times I went shopping. 3rd time was the charm!

Skull Hand Towels - Another item not on the website. These are velvety and satiny and look awesome with the skull bath rug.

Skull Porcelin Tray - one of the first things out at Target this year and my store only had three total. You'll be lucky to still find one I think but it's definitely worth looking for.

More skull salt & pepper shakers, garland, lights, too much to even list them all. Needless to say, I'm broke, my apartment is bursting at the seams with more skull stuff than I know what to do with and I'm really happy.

So just to follow up, if you haven't followed Big Brother Season 13 this summer...My friend Adam made it to the final three but Rachel ended up winning. Still, he did really awesome and I think it's great that he got to live one of his dreams.

The Skulls and Bacon t-shirt that was supposed to be in his gift basket when he won the HOH competion wasn't included so he didn't get it until the show was over. However, he was rockin' the Skulls And Bacon tee at the afterparty in Vegas, baby!

And today I see an article about Adam's time in the BB House in one of our local papers, here's the best quote ever:

And what will he miss the most about the Big Brother house?

"The unlimited supply of bacon," he answered without a moment of hesitation. "Not one week did we ever run out of bacon. Now, when I want bacon, I can't go to the storage room and just pull out another package. I'm going to have to go to the store and buy it."

Anyone remember how crazy I went when Crystal Head Vodka was released in that awesome skull bottle? When times that by 10 and you may understand my manic need to own these four day of the dead skull bottles from KAH Tequila.

I honestly can't believe I haven't updated this blog since the beginning of December. I'm so lazy, it's a wonder I don't just microwave my bacon in the morning. It took Matthew Stroul from Austin, TX to kick me into gear when he sent me pics of his new tattoo. His new SKULLS & BACON tattoo!

How awesome, right? I love it. Now if I ever decide to get one I'll just be an imitator, Matthew is the original.

While I'm here, I can't not post about Archie McPhee's new, amazing bacony wonder - Bacon Toothpaste!

Not that I need any more skull stuff. I just got back from my first trip to L.A., which was absolutely amazing. Back in September, I warned you that Jones Soda was coming out with Bacon Soda. It made it's appearance a few days ago and even my mom has emailed me about it.

J&D's and Jones has teamed up and are offering the Bacon Soda as part of a gift pack with only two sodas. I'm not sure why you can't buy the soda separately and it looks like it probably won't make it into the stores. That said, the J&D’s Bacon Jones Soda Gift Pack is pretty cool and only $9.99.

Effervescent Bacon Drink Tablets

Even I think that the bacon madness may have gone a little too far with this but...it is kinda cool in a weird novelty way. I'm pretty sure the people at Archie McPhee are high all the time, you need to be to think up things like this. If you drop one of these magic tablets into a glass of water it will instantly begin to dissolve, creating a cascade of bubbles that will infuse the water with a delicious bacon flavor. They say they work just as well in milk or juice but that's kinda gross. Each tin contains about fifteen tablets.

Thanksgiving Gumballs - $3.50

There's no bacon in these Thanksgiving gumballs but I think they're neat although I don't expect them to be that tasty. They remind me of the three-course dinner gum from Willy Wonka although I hope these don't require a trip to the Juicing Room. Each tin contains about twenty-two gumballs in the classic flavors of Thanksgiving - turkey, cranberry and pumpkin pie. While we're on the subject, scientists are working on gum that would taste like a three-course mean. For realz.

In other exciting bacon news, a few weeks ago, I was checking out an amazing looking recipe for Praline Bacon Ice Cream on the excellent ice cream blog, Scoop Adventures. Ice cream maker extraordinaire, Lindsay, made some for the Bacon Takedown in New Orleans.

She was also giving away 10 pounds of bacon from Hormel and an awesome Bacon Takedown apron. I entered and actually WON! I've been handing out free bacon to friends and family and the Bacon Takedown apron looks great hanging in my kitchen. Man, I have been trying to get this post up all week but I am in serious skull shopping overload and now completely broke. Went to my local Target on Sunday and picked up TONS of new stuff. Lardon - L.A.'s All Bacon Food Truck!

I can't believe it actually took this long for it to happen, but the wait is over...America now has an all bacon food truck! Lardon is roaming around Los Angeles, CA starting today and it's not so coincidental that I'm taking a vacation to L.A. in October.

I'm pretty tempted to steal that truck and drive it right to NYC, eating up all of the bacon goodies on the way.

Wandering around Etsy.com today, I ran across this amazing Bacon Lamp ($35.00). Made of archival ink and paper, the bacon looks great in the daylight but this lamp really comes to life with it's bacony glow.

The only other bacon lamp I've seen was made out of real bacon and, well, while that's cool, it's not very practical, is it?

Holy cow, well this made my day! I love the show Top Chef, I dvr it every week to make sure I don't miss anything. Tonight, just as I was walking in the door, I got an email from TS Rogers, who designed my awesome Skulls & Bacon logo. He said that one of the chefs was wearing a Skulls & Bacon t-shirt on the show. I ran to my tv and check it out:

I Need Your Skull Art Show

This past Saturday, I trekked over to the MF Gallery in Brooklyn for the opening of the "I Need Your Skull" art show. 30 international artists were asked to present a piece depicting a human skull and all the money raised from sales of the skull art will be used to build a giant, 20 foot 3-D skull on the facade of the MF Gallery building.

I was really impressed by the artwork and really wanted to buy something. There were quite a few that I really liked but the ONE I insanely wanted was $400, which while not that expensive for a piece of art, is still out of my budget.

I wish they had posted a picture and name next to each display, as most of the artists were there and I would have loved to speak with them but I didn't know who anyone was. The space is small and it was pretty crowded and hot, so I didn't stay all that long.

When my friends and I left to get some food and drinks and just a few blocks away, I made an *awesome* find. Someone had thrown out a perfectly good cow skull! Of course, I immediately grabbed it. Here's a picture of me giddy with delight and gingerly holding the thing in case it was infested with something. It seemed clean enough, so we took it out to eat with us. Great thing about nyc, no one at the restaurant even questioned why there was a cow skull sitting on our table.

Awesome, right?

So this guy in the U.K. falls asleep while frying some bacon and "miraculously" wakes up to a house full of smoke and a pan full of extra crispy bacon. After scraping the pan clean, he was left with this Jesus Crust burnt into the bottom:

Real? Not sure, I'm not really a believer in stuff like this. If it is, it's kinda creepy but then at the least we can assume that Jesus loves bacon too.

Bacon Vinaigrette Candles

Rick Gresh, the chef over at David Burke's Primehouse at The James Hotel Chicago, has me floored with his edible Bacon Vinaigrette Candles! Pouring the candle on your dinner table over your salad? Ingenious.

Gresh says the delectable 2-inch votives leave lasting impressions on Primehouse's patrons. "We send [the candles] to the table and first, people think it's for ambiance. Then, when we drop the [spinach] salad, we pour the candle over it. You always hear a lot of screams," he laughs.

Not only can you try these at the restaurant but you can buy them for a measly $5 or since Rick was nice enough to share the recipe, make them for yourself at home.

For the bacon candles

1 cup red wine vinegar
2 gelatin sheets (or 1 teaspoon powdered gelatin)
3/4 pound bacon
2 teaspoons minced thyme
2 teaspoons minced parsley
1 teaspoon black pepper
Two 4-inch lengths of twine, dipped in vegetable oil
Two 2-ounce votive candle containers

For the spinach salad

1/2 pound spinach, washed, torn into bite-size pieces
Salt and pepper
1/2 red onion, sliced into 1/2 inch rings
1 egg, hard-boiled, peeled and coarsely chopped
Chipotle powder (optional)
2 ounces feta cheese, diced

1. Make the vinegar gelatin in a small pot, bring the vinegar to a boil and add the gelatin. Pour the gelatin into a small pan or bowl and chill until solid (about 2 hours). When set, chop the vinegar gelatin into small cubes.

2. Render the bacon: Cook the bacon over low heat until the fat is completely rendered (about 30 minutes). Pour the fat through a strainer, discard the solids, and chill. When fat is semi-solid (soft enough to stir easily but not too warm, or it will melt the gelatin), stir in the thyme, parsley and pepper.

3. Make the candles: Hold the twine in the candle container and spoon in a layer of the bacon fat. Top with a sprinkle of gelatin cubes, and repeat layers until the top of the container is reached. Repeat with the other candle. Chill until the fat is solid.

4. Make the salad: Toss the spinach with salt and pepper. Broil or grill the onion until soft. Dust the egg with chipotle powder, if using, and layer on a plate with onion, feta cheese and spinach. Light bacon candles, and after the fat melts (about 10 minutes), slowly pour over salads at the table.

Yum and yum.

Hi Everyone! I'm back from an unintended, extended blogging vacation but hopefully everyone was too busy during the holidays to notice my lack of posts. At the end of 2009, I took a new position at my company which has me working long hours and no more access to the internet during the day so that seriously cuts down on the time that I have to put into Skulls & Bacon. That said, I'm not giving up this blog, it's way too personally fulfilling, but my updates may take longer than I'd prefer.

I was a lame-o this year and didn't get dressed up for Halloween, not enough time this year to put together a good costume and I will never half-ass a Halloween costume. I did wear a whole bunch of skull stuff to work on Friday but I'm pretty sure no one was surprised by that.

You know, some people keep trying to tell us that the bacon "fad" is dead but this year's Halloween costumes are a great indication that they are full of crap. Browsing thru random pictures via Flickr found a treasure trove of homemade bacon costumes for adults, kids and pets. I applaud these people for not taking the easy way out and buying the one off-the-shelf bacon costume available.

And these were just the tip of the iceberg! Go bacon!

The Skeleton Chair

How amazing is this chair? I stumbled across Olde Good Things, a store that carries antique and architectural artifacts, just two blocks away from my office.

The picture is not the best since I took it through the store window with my cell phone. The sign on it said something about a Masonic Lodge and Vincent Price movie? So I had to investigate...

The inspiration for this distinctive chair is perhaps a known Russian example, signed and dated in Cyrillic, "Ivanovic Cheshcevi to Nickolai Ivanoovic Kolemin, Chair from Masonic Lodge 1838", which sold as lot 278 at Christie's, New York, January 25, 1992.

Vincent Price owned a whole set of skeleton chairs. At least four variations of the large, scary chairs have been sold in recent years. A few were painted white, one was dark mahogany and one was a rocking chair.

That Russian chair sold in London in 1980 for $36,300, sold again in 1992 for about half that, then sold in 2009 for $3,198 at Jackson's Auctions in Cedar Falls, Iowa. I believe the price tag in the window of Olde Good Things was $3500.

I covet this chair. I don't care how uncomfortable it probably is.

The Case of the Missing Bacon

Numerous times during my bacon research I have come across news stories of stolen bacon. You know how it is when you need your bacon fix and you're a little short on cash. This story however, made me laugh so I needed to share:

A St. Anne (Illinois) resident reported that $10.18 worth of lunch meats and a slab of bacon were stolen from her car. She told police she came home from a store where she bought the meats and left them inside of her car with all of the windows rolled down while she went inside to eat some watermelon, sheriff's reports said. An old Polaroid camera, also in the car, was missing as well.

Really? She wanted to eat the watermelon so bad that she couldn't carry $10 worth of bacon into the house?

Obviously, bacon burglary is more common than one would think and stores need to protect themselves. For example:

The day that Target puts out their Halloween merchandise is to me what Christmas morning must be like to a little kid. I don't celebrate Christmas but from all the movies I've seen where kids are screaming, jumping up and down for joy of awesome presents, that's what I imagine I look like in the Halloween section of Target.

On September 2nd, Chef Stephanie Izard will be whipping up the second Wandering Goat dinner, part of a traveling dinner series leading up to the opening of her new restaurant, The Drunken Goat. The menu for the Wandering Goat dinner is all about the bacon!

“After having so much fun at the last dinner, I am really looking forward to meeting another group of new people and sharing some of the new creations I have been working on. At my restaurant, the Drunken Goat, we will serve our own cured meats (including bacon), so lately we have tried out a bunch of different cures and smoking methods. I’m excited to share my findings!” says Stephanie.

Some of the menu items listed are: Bacon Crisped Oysters, Bacon and Smoked Trout Salad with Heirloom Tomatoes, Aji-Braised Pork Belly, and a selection of different Bacon Gelato from Black Dog Gelato.
