Local Harvest Bacon Bonanza

I stumbled across LocalHarvest.com while searching for cottage bacon and now I am trying to restrain myself from ordering more meat that can fit in my freezer. Local Harvest is America's #1 organic and local food website where you can purchase products from family farms across the country.

So much scrumptious looking bacon on this site! So far I'm thinking I'm gonna go for the nitrate-free cottage bacon from Hidden Stream Farm in Minnesota.

Although with 9 pages of pork to choose from, I haven't really decided yet. One oddity that really stands out is the Pork Crown Roast from Sweet Briar Farms in Oregon. I know it's pork, but I'm not exactly sure what to make of it yet.

They have lots of other types of local foods and organic products too but I haven't been able to tear myself away from the pork to check them out.

Dreaming of Bacon?

Literally?

Glamour Magazine says eating bacon in your dream means continuing prosperity in your life. Dreaming of rancid bacon is a suggestion to see a doctor. Cooking bacon in your dream means that a surprise or gift is coming that will please you very much.

Dream Central's Dream Dictonary adds a few other interpretations. To dream of handling bacon with dirty hands is an ill omen and must be taken with the dream as a whole. Bacon that has gone rancid denotes a failed affair, either love or business. Curing bacon properly is a good sign that you are doing something right.

Basically it seems that dreaming of good bacon=good and dreaming of bad bacon=bad. Go figure. A bad bacon dream just doesn't seem possible.

Or...maybe it just means you're hungry and you need some tasty tasty bacon.

Ceramic Skull Mugs

It's unusual to find these Skull Mugs sold in a set. I really love these and at only $16.99 for a set of 4, they're totally affordable. Once I get these they'll be the only matching set of coffee mugs I own. I'll almost feel like a grown-up.

Bacon Floss !!!

Not only am I happy because it's Friday, but also because the people over at Archie McPhee are genius. The consistently come out with awesome bacon novelties that just can't be beat. The newest in the line is Bacon Dental Floss. That's right, now you can improve your dental hygiene while enjoying the amazing flavor of crispy fried bacon.

As soon as I get my hands on this I'll let you know how it is. The bacon mints are not my favorite but the bacon toothpicks were a real winner and I expect the floss to be as well.

Skull Beach Towels

It seems a lot of people get to my blog looking for Skull Beach Towels. In addition to the Skurvy Skull Beach Towel I posted way back when I started this blog, I've been able to find a few others worthy of a link.

Skurvy Skull Beach Towel ($24.95)

Skull Beach Towel - 30x60 ($14.99)

Skull 'n Bone Beach Towel - 40x72 ($19.99)

The Classic Jolly Roger Beach Towel - 30x60 ($18.99)

There are some that I've seen and LOVE but goddamn those designer labels are expensive. $548 for a towel is a tad out of my range.

Flitch Day

The holiday of Flitch Day began with an old, old custom thought to date back to the year 1104 in Little Dunmow, England.

A flitch of bacon (flitch = side) is awarded as prize for any married couple who could prove to a jury of bachelors and maidens that they had lived together in harmony and fidelity for the past year and had not wished themselves "unmarried". Very few have brought home the bacon.

The ancient oath of the flitch is expressed in rhyme:

"We do swear by custom of confession
That we ne're made nuptial transgression
Nor since we were married man and wife
By household brawl or contentious strife,
Or otherwise at bed or board,
Offended each other in deed or word;
Or since the parish clerk said amen,
Wished ourselves unmarried again;
Or in a twelvemonth and a day
Repented in thought in any way,
But continue true and in desire
As when we joined in holy quire."

When this oath was taken by each couple, it was the duty of the officer who administered it to reply:

"Since to these conditions, without any fear,
Of your own accord you do freely swear,
A whole flitch of bacon you shall receive,
And bear it hence with love and good leave;
For this is our custom at Dunmow well known
Though the pleasure be ours, the bacon's your own."

Is this the origin of "bringing home the bacon"? Perhaps.

Any holiday where you parade bacon down the street is alright in my book.

We should really think about bringing this tradition to the states.

The Dunmow Flitch Trials are still held every four years in Great Dunmow, Essex, England and the next trials are July 12, 2008.

The history is really interesting, you can read more about it here and even buy tickets to view the event in person! If I was in England, I would definitely go check this out.

The Meat Land of my Dreams

I'm a few months late on this but had to post this ad campaign for the salumeria Negroni, an Italian food company whose specialties include a whole variety of salty and delicious meat products. I ran across this ad at recidivism.org. Click the pic for a full size view.

Skull Pinata from Pinatas.com

I had a pinata at one of birthday parties when I was a kid. I don't remember what it was nor what it was filled with, but I do remember me and my friends taking big chunks out of my parents basement ceiling. I would have remembered if I had had something as marvelous as this glow in the dark Skull Pinata from Pinatas.com.

Glow in the Dark Skull Pinata $24.99

Althought it would be a shame to bash his pretty little head in, I would do it for these enchanting Skull & Crossbone gummy candies.

Or....you could fill the pinata with bacon. Wouldn't that be an unexpected surprise.

Bacon Tattoos

Nothing proclaims your undying love for bacon more than permanently tattooing it on your body. I've come across some great bacon tattoos (and some not so great ones) that I've compiled for our collective enjoyment. Click on the pics to go to the websites where you may be able to find more information on these works of art.

I think this one is my favorite.

**UPDATE!: Tat owner identified! The Hamzinger found his bacon armband here and I gotta give him props as this is one of my very favorite bacon tattoos. He is a member of the awesome & funny cover band The Misfats.

There are a few more but I'll save those for part 2. If you find any bacon or pork related tattoos that you think I should feature, please email me the link at skullsandbacon (at) gmail.com.

Skull Gas Pump

This Skull Funnel from Spencer's is too cool. While I don't believe I'd use this for it's intended purpose, I'm sure I could find a good use for it.

Deep Fried Mac & Cheese w/ Bacon

I haven't done many recipes on this blog because there are other bacon blogs that already do an awesome job of that. However, I apparently feel asleep watching the Food Network last night because when I woke up this morning, this is what greeted me from the tv...

Paula Deen, the queen of food that's bad for your body but good for your soul, woke me up with this delectible looking bacon wrapped deep fried Mac & Cheese and now I'm considering running out to the store for the ingredients.

Too many puppies, kittens, butterflies and flowers, bah. But finally I can complete a project and know that I'll be able to display it somewhere without shame!

McBacon

My friend KingAdPoch™ is a bacon lover of the highest caliber:

This is KingAdPoch™

He recently returned from a trip to Amsterdam with this picture:

Amsterdam has always been "high" on my list of places to visit and now ever more so. Wondering why we don't have this delectible sounding fast food delight here in the U.S., I found that Americans are being deprived of McDonald's bacon concoctions!

In addition to the McBacon in Amsterdam, some quick research turned up the Crispy McBacon sandwich in Malta and Italy:

and the McBacon Roll from the U.K., which has back bacon and brown sauce served in a maize-topped roll:

Argentina has the Pechuga Bacon Grill and the Pechuga Bacon Crispy, Germany has the Chicken Goumet Chipotle auch mit Bacon and also still has the McRib. Interesting. There's a bunch more regional McDonald's sandwiches that we'll probably never see here. I guess it's time to get a passport.
